Why has no football team, however great, ever gone 38-0? The romantic answer is about pressure, fatigue and the unpredictability of the sport. But the simplest answer is arithmetic. To win all 38, you have to win every match — and probabilities that look comfortable for one game become vanishingly small when you multiply them 38 times.
