AC Milan, late 1980s–early 1990s

Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan, later continued by Fabio Capello, paired attacking Dutch trio Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard with the greatest organised back four in history — Baresi, Maldini, Costacurta and Tassotti. They won back-to-back European Cups and went unbeaten in Serie A in 1991–92.

Liverpool and the English era, late 1970s–1980s

Between 1977 and 1984 Liverpool won four European Cups, the spine of a relentless, pass-and-move machine that dominated England and Europe for the better part of a decade.

Barcelona, 2008–2012

Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona took Ajax’s ideas to a new peak: tiki-taka possession football orchestrated by the Xavi–Iniesta–Busquets midfield. They won two Champions Leagues and multiple La Ligas, and the 2010–11 side is frequently named the finest club team of the modern era.
